New Zealand sea lion (Phocarctos hookeri) Also known as Hooker's sea lion. It is the world's rarest sea lion and is endemic to New Zealand. Sea lions were once spread right around New Zealand, but hunting pressure reduced their distribution to the subantarctic islands. In recent years sea lions have started to return to the mainland and we usually see them on our tour around the South Island. The animal pictured is a young male about 3 years old
