Wandering albatross
(Diomedia gibsoni) Toroa
Two species of wanderer breed in New Zealand, the antipodean (antipodensis) which breeds on the Antipodes and Campbell Island and gibsoni which breeds on the Auckland Islands. We also see the snowy albatross or (chionoptera). The bird siting on the water was photographed at Kaikoura and is a bird from the Auckland Islands. The picture of a flying bird on the pelagic tours page is a young wandering albatross, possibly the smaller and darker antipodean species, also photographed at Kaikoura.
