Red-crowned parakeet (Cyanoramphus novaezelandiae) Kakariki The endemic subspecies novaezelandiae breeds on the main islands, many offshore islands and the Auckland Islands in the subantarctic where this bird was photographed. Although scarce on the mainland they are found in good numbers on off-shore islands. We see them most often on Tiritiri Matangi Island and Stewart Island. Their presence is usually heralded by their loud chatter.
