Fiordland crested penguin (Eudyptes pachyrhynchus) Tawaki The Fiordland crested penguins breed only in New Zealand in small colonies in South Westland, Fiordland and Stewart Island. They are winter breeders so the best time to see them at their breeding colonies in New Zealand is between July and November. After November the adults return to sea to feed up before returning ashore to moult between January and March. They differ from other crested penguins in having white stripes on their cheeks, and no bare skin at the base of the bill.
